With their fierce expressions and exaggerated physical features, these two fantastic guardian creatures were intended to guard the entrance to a tomb, warding off evil as well as keeping the soul of the deceased from wandering. Known as "earth spirits" or qitou, they are markedly different in appearance: one has an animal face and a pair of antlers growing above its eyebrows; the other sports a human face with huge protruding ears and a short horn surrounded by fiery, twisting hair. Their many elongated spikes heighten the fearful intensity.Before tomb sculptures were placed in the tomb, they were carried through the streets in a funerary procession. Funerary gifts provided the deceased with means for the afterlife. They were also an expression of filial piety and demonstrated the wealth and power of the descendants.

Fearsome composite creatures such as this are among the most admired objects from the Tang dynasty (618-907). With grimacing human or bestial faces, wings, and flaming manes, these fantastic creatures were made as guardians for the tombs of princes and high-ranking nobles to ward off evil forces. The random patterns created by running glazes in cream, brown, and green, a dramatic effect deliberately exploited by Tang potters, further accentuate their energy and power.
The bull gives scale to the size of this powerful figure and suggests a derivation from the Buddhist guardian of the south, which was the preferred direction for doors, whether imperial or tomb.
This figure's alert, defensive posture expresses great energy. His raised left hand would have grasped a lance or pike. Though his fierce face looks rather naturalistic, the curled, curving brow evokes this tomb guardian's superhuman force. He stands on a bull, which implies his power, but also establishes his kinship with a deity that came to China from India with Buddhism; known as Virudhaka in Sanskrit, he is the guardian of the south. South was the most auspicious orientation for palaces as well as tombs.During the Tang dynasty, ceramic tomb figures were fired either glazed or unglazed, then painted. This example, arguably the finest of its kind, combines both techniques, and the sculpting, glazing, and painted face are all of the highest quality. The degree of detail, such as the folded fingers of his right hand, the realistic posture, and the fluttering cloth under his armor, is virtually unique. The maker's mastery of the firing process is evident in the handling of the three-colored lead glaze, which was allowed to run on the bull's flank but remains contained in the separate areas of the guardian's garment. Traces of gold on the buckles of his armor indicate that the figure was made for a person of very high status. The idea that lions, lionesses, leopards, sometimes winged, sometimes not, were suitable guardians of sepulchres because they had protective powers was an ancient Oriental one which spread to Egypt, Anatolia, even Mycenae, during the Bronze Age and was brought to Etruria from the East. As inspirers of dread, then, they were, for instance, placed at each side of the entrances of chamber tombs which were cut into hills (as Veii and Cerveteri), or painted on the walls inside the door. When no hills were available and tumuli were built, they were sometimes put on the peak or ranged round the top of the low girdling walls (as at Chiusi and Vulci). On temple-like sarcophagi deposited inside the tomb chambers (as at Chiusi) they might be found on the lids, either adorning the ridges of each facade or facing outward from each corner.

Upon settling into the New World, Ainz begins to make Nazarick his own seat of power. While this is happening, Nazarick is invaded by workers of the Baharuth Empire. Ainz intentionally allows the invaders into their tomb to experiment and test out Nazarick's defense systems.[17] In retaliation for their invasion of the tomb,[18] Nazarick easily disposes of the worker groups without any difficulty by the latter opposing them. At the same time, Nazarick uses this invasion to later on justify their contact and confrontation with the Empire when a chance for talks of negotiation is established.[19]
The exterior shown outside the dungeon depicts the Great Tomb of Nazarick as being 200 meters wide in all four directions. It is enclosed by 6-meter tall perimeter walls surrounding the tomb, with two entrances being the front and back gates. There is no pattern to the Nazarick's tombstones. There are lots of statues of goddesses and angels dotting around the cemetery, some of which could have been regarded as a piece of art lingering about. In addition, there are 4 mausoleums or tombs in the four cardinal directions with a large mausoleum in the center. The surroundings of the center mausoleum being the largest tomb that exists with an entrance to the Great Tomb of Nazarick hold eight 10 meter tall armor-wearing figures. This central tomb is the upper-most level that one can teleport to by using a Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown.[27] When the dungeon was transported to the New World, Mare Bello Fiore uses his magic to cover the walls of area to hide it from discovery.

This place, which is thoroughly inimical to the living, perfectly fits the description of a "hell world."
